Ayush Mhatre, 17, Joins CSK as Replacement for Injured Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ayush Mhatre, a youthful opener for Mumbai had reportedly joined the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad for the season 2025 of Indian Premier League (IPL). He has been called in to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain who is being  injured. It is bad news to the fans that his shattered elbow has forced him to miss out  the rest of the competition that is IPL 2025.

On March 30, His injury happened when he was playing for CSK against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Gaikwad suffered a serious injury to his elbow that made him discontinued. After being removed by pacer Tushar Deshpande, he took a severe blow on the elbow.

Despite his injury, the CSK skipper kept batting and managed to score 63 runs, but his team was able to win the game.Gaikwad played two more games for the five-time champions before being disqualified from the competition. MS Dhoni has been put in his place as  captain.

CSK Brings in 17-Year-Old Ayush Mhatre as Replacement for Injured Ruturaj Gaikwad

Late on Saturday, April 13, CSK has made the decision to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad with Ayush Mhatre for the tournament, according to a report from Cricbuzz. The team asked that the child join the squad right away.

Mhatre did not receive any bids despite having recently registered for the auction with a starting price of ₹30 lakh. 

According to the report, CSK summoned Mhatre, Urvil Patel of Gujarat, and Salman Nizar of Kerala to Chennai for trials.

Mhatre has participated in nine First-Class (FC) games and seven List A games since making his senior debut for Mumbai in 2024. He is regarded as one of the most potential young players in Mumbai’s cricket circuit, despite the fact that he has not yet participated in a senior T20 match.

He has scored 504 runs, including two hundreds and a half-century, in the nine FC games. He has amassed 458 runs, including two hundreds, in List A.

CSK is now getting ready for their seventh match of the season in Lucknow. They will play the Lucknow SuperGiants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium on Monday, April 15.

CSK will be keen to defeat LSG in order to save their campaign. With just one victory from six games, they are currently at the bottom of the points standings. Despite winning their season opener, they have since lost five straight games.
